The Andy Smythe Trio

When

Friday 22 March 2024
7:30pm - 10:30pm

Event Type

Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist & former Orpington Friday Folk Club resident Andy Smythe returns to OLC with his talented trio of Jimmy Van Lin (mandolin/Fiddle) & Les Elvin (bass) ..stars in their own right.

Through his music, Andy aims for a Brit-pop renaissance with a retro sound combining the melodic & lyrical craftsmanship of the Beatles with the energetic 90’s approach of Blur & The Verve. He writes about his ‘inner world’ in a Lennon/Bowie style & sings in a powerful & distinctive Jeff Buckley-like voice which covers four octaves.

Alongside Andy’s old favourites, he will be playing a selection of songs from his new album ‘Poetry in Exile’.

In support will be Swans. Barry Ewing & Gail Newton have formed a guitar & vocal harmony duo. Their repertoire is predominantly covers & characterised by combining a bold & eclectic choice of songs with well-worked-out arrangements.

From 7.30 pm until 8.20 pm, we’re open to lively floorspots before Andy comes on to play his first set. Singers, musicians & poets are welcome. Come early if you’d like to do a turn. Time is limited & we’ll try to fit in as many as possible. Please be ready when you’re called & keep it short & sweet…this part of the evening won’t be allowed to overrun!!

A hat collection in CASH goes in its entirety to the guests. The suggested minimum contribution is £6, but please give a little bit more if you can afford it.

The club premises & CAMRA award-winning bar will be open on the day from 5.30 pm. It’s CARD payments only, with free entry to OLC members & £1 to non-members.
