A rare opportunity to see the legendary Wizz Jones… not to be missed !!
With a career spanning more than 60 years, Wizz is officially retired but tempted out of his south London home for the occasional local-ish gig, sometimes accompanied by his son Simeon on Sax, Flute & harmonica.

Inspired by Big Bill Broonzy & Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, young Wizz learnt guitar licks from the likes of Davy Graham & Long John Baldry whilst playing in Soho coffee bars in the late 50s.

In 59, he hitched his way to a stay in St Ives & in the early 60s followed the buskers’ trail from the streets of Paris to the markets of Marrakech, returning to Britain with his unique acoustic guitar style, an eclectic repertoire & a ‘right-hand worthy of Broonzy’!

John Renbourn, Eric Clapton & Keith Richards have all credited him as an important influence & in May 2012, Bruce Springsteen opened his Berlin show with Wizz’s song ‘When I Leave Berlin’.

There’s also a 20-minute mid-evening support spot from highly respected local guitarist & singer Doug Field + Sarah Weir on mandolin & vocals.. the duo regularly perform together in Calico Thieves.

From 7.30 pm until 8.15 pm, we’re open to lively floorspots before Wizz comes on to play his first set. Singers, musicians & poets are welcome. Come early if you’d like to do a turn. Time is limited & we’ll try to fit in as many as possible. Please be ready when you’re called & keep it short & sweet… this part of the evening won’t be allowed to overrun!!

A hat collection in CASH goes in its entirety to the guests. The suggested minimum contribution is £7.50, but please give a little bit more if you can afford it.

The club premises & CAMRA award-winning bar will be open on the day from 5.30 pm. It’s CARD payments only with free entry to OLC members & £1 to non-members.
