This is going to be a very special night at Orpington Liberal Club, which you really don’t want to miss.

Our guest TOM LEWIS is a living legend, still going strong & touring at the grand old age of 81. He is renowned for composing ‘The Last Shanty’ (A Sailor Ain’t A Sailor), ‘Sailor’s Prayer’ (Send Down A Dove), and ‘Legend’ (Marching Inland), plus many other contemporary songs of the sea that have become folk standards.

Tom’s repertoire also encompasses many traditional maritime songs and shanties. He sings in a clear, strong voice, often accompanying himself on button accordion or ukulele. He engages his audiences with his in-depth knowledge and understanding of seafaring traditions along with a keen sense of humour.

He served for 24 years as a Royal Navy Submariner before, following in the footsteps of his friend & mentor, the late great Cyril Tawney, & taking up folk singing for a living.

We start the evening with floorspots during the 1st 40 minutes, welcoming lively contributions from singers, musicians & poets before bringing Tom on for the 1st of his two sets at 8.15pm. If you would like to do a turn, Please come early at night & be ready when you’re called & try to keep it short & sweet.
